Are you interested in bridging your interests in technology and health care? Gain expertise in translating biomedical data into knowledge that improves individual and population health outcomes.
The Bachelor of Science program in biomedical informatics and data science empowers you to harness data and analytics, including machine learning and artificial intelligence, to advance health care and biomedical innovation. You are immersed in a broad, interdisciplinary curriculum spanning computer science, biology, health systems and data analytics --- all of which are necessary to work at the forefront of precision health, digital health, biotechnology and public health innovation.
The program blends computational, biological and digital health sciences to give you a strong foundation in algorithm development, data integration, software development and predictive modeling. You gain hands-on experience with AI tools, data science methods and digital health software to monitor health in real time, detect critical health events, predict symptoms and forecast impending adverse outcomes at individual and population levels.
You develop critical skills in:
- data acquisition and analysis: gathering, processing and gaining insight from biomedical data
- data management: understanding how to organize and maintain vast amounts of health information
- knowledge representation: transforming complex data into understandable and usable formats
- modeling and machine learning: using advanced algorithms to predict health trends and inform clinical decisions
You also have the opportunity to conduct next-generation research with faculty experts in areas such as bioinformatics, AI, clinical informatics, medical imaging and population health, preparing you to address practical health challenges.
This program may be eligible for an Optional Practical Training extension for up to 24 months. This OPT work authorization period may help international students gain skills and experience in the U.S. Those interested in an OPT extension should review ASU degrees that qualify for the STEM-OPT extension at ASU's International Students and Scholars Center website.
The OPT extension only applies to students on an F-1 visa and does not apply to students completing a degree through ASU Online.

ASU is committed to helping students thrive by offering tools that allow personalization of the transfer path to ASU. Students may use MyPath2ASU® to outline a list of recommended courses to take prior to transfer.
ASU has transfer partnerships in Arizona and across the country to create a simplified transfer experience for students. These pathway programs include exclusive benefits, tools and resources, and they help students save time and money in their college journey.
Program learning outcomes identify what a student will learn or be able to do upon completion of their program. This program’s learning outcomes include the following:
- Articulate informatics solutions to improve patient care.
- Implement existing informatics solutions to improve patient care.
- Analyze large data sets to improve decisions for patient care or population health.
- Implement informatics solutions to represent and manage biomedical data
Students gain valuable experience when studying abroad --- experience that enhances their resumes. With more than 300 programs available, Global Education programs enable students to tailor their experience to their specific interests and skill sets. Students in biomedical informatics are able to expand their knowledge of how health care systems impact society in a variety of cultures, and they experience new and distinct information science and technology environments across the globe.
The College of Health Solutions recommends these programs for students majoring in biomedical informatics and data science.
Whether they want to improve patient care, develop new medical technologies or contribute to public health initiatives, graduates with a degree in the rapidly expanding field of biomedical informatics and data science are prepared for careers in a wide variety of settings.
They are employed in positions such as:
- bioinformatician
- data science analyst
- public health informatics scientist
- software engineer
Those with interests in life sciences and technology may see this program as an innovative way to combine the two. Others may use this degree as the first step toward medical school, a career in advanced medical research or graduate-level study in biomedical informatics.
Example job titles and salaries listed below are not necessarily entry level, and students should take into consideration how years of experience and geographical location may affect pay scales. Some jobs also may require advanced degrees, certifications or state-specific licensure.

Program term definitions
Accelerated programs allow students the opportunity to expedite the completion of their degree.
Accelerated master's
These programs allow students to accelerate their studies to earn a bachelor's plus a master's degree in as few as five years (for some programs).
Each program has requirements students must meet to be eligible for consideration. Students typically receive approval to pursue the accelerated master's during the junior year of their bachelor's degree program. Interested students can learn about eligibility requirements and how to apply.
Concurrent degrees allow students to pursue their own personal or professional interests, earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. To add a concurrent degree to your existing degree, work with your academic advisor.
Joint programs, or jointly conferred degrees, are offered by more than one college and provide opportunities for students to take advantage of the academic strengths of two academic units. Upon graduation, students are awarded one degree and one diploma conferred by two colleges.
ASU adds new programs to Degree Search frequently. Come back often and look for the "New Programs" option.
ASU Online offers programs in an entirely online format with multiple enrollment sessions throughout the year. See https://asuonline.asu.edu/ for more information.
