Program description

The Bachelor of Science program in sports science and performance programming with a concentration in strength and conditioning has been carefully developed to align with the new eligibility competencies necessary for graduates to sit for the exam to become a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist® with the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Beginning in 2030, only graduates from accredited strength and conditioning programs will be eligible to sit for certification, which is required for many careers in the sports performance industry.

Through this program, students:

  • design workouts that push the body to its limits and help others hit new performance goals
  • engage in hands-on practical experiences in performance assessment and programming using advanced technologies and evidence-based practices
  • gain the skills needed to inspire and assist the next generation of athletes and help them continue their athletic journey on the coaching side
  • learn how to prepare military and other frontline tactical professionals to perform at their peak when the stakes are higher than in any game

Curriculum
Concurrent program options
Students pursuing concurrent degrees (also known as a “double major”) earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. Working with their academic advisors, students can create their own concurrent degree combination. Some combinations are not possible due to high levels of overlap in curriculum.

Sports science and performance programming students work to push the limits of peak sports performance. When participating in a Global Education program, they gain valuable skills in leadership, communication and critical thinking, which they can use to push the limits of their personal knowledge and experience as well. Study abroad experience enables students to stand out in a competitive field and leads to cultural enrichment and competency.

Career opportunities

Graduates are prepared to sit for certification testing through the National Strength and Conditioning Association for certified strength and conditioning specialist or tactical strength and conditioning facilitator credentials. They are also prepared to work in the sports performance field or to pursue graduate study in sports science, athletic training or other exercise science-related disciplines.

Career options for those who have completed this degree program include opportunities in sports performance training in high school, collegiate, professional and private sector markets. In addition, graduates are prepared for careers in tactical performance training with local, state and national governmental agencies, including work with police officers, firefighters and military personnel. Graduates are also prepared to work in the emerging sports science field or to consult on athlete talent or potential.

What are accelerated programs?
Accelerated programs allow students the opportunity to expedite the completion of their degree.

Accelerated master's

These programs allow students to accelerate their studies to earn a bachelor's plus a master's degree in as few as five years (for some programs).

Each program has requirements students must meet to be eligible for consideration. Students typically receive approval to pursue the accelerated master’s during the junior year of their bachelor's degree program. Interested students can learn about eligibility requirements and how to apply.
What are concurrent programs?
Concurrent degrees allow students to pursue their own personal or professional interests, earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. To add a concurrent degree to your existing degree, work with your academic advisor.
What are joint programs?
Joint programs, or jointly conferred degrees, are offered by more than one college and provide opportunities for students to take advantage of the academic strengths of two academic units. Upon graduation, students are awarded one degree and one diploma conferred by two colleges.
