Description

In the certificate program in global engineering, you gain the interdisciplinary knowledge and skills needed to address complex challenges around the world in the certificate program in global engineering. The program includes foundational coursework in engineering perspectives, global engineering design, and international-themed courses relevant to your major --- such as sustainability, energy, environment, global development, leadership and entrepreneurship. With a focus on global systems thinking, the program prepares you to become a socially responsible and effective engineer who's capable of addressing the interconnected problems that transcend national borders.

The program includes virtually delivered programs, such as the Global Career Accelerator, that expose you to global industries, helping you build your professional skills through internships and applicable projects. Experiential programs like human-centered design projects immerse you in solving practical problems through design thinking, including customer discovery, rapid prototyping and field testing.

In addition to two required courses --- FSE 150 Perspectives on Grand Challenges for Engineering and FSE 420 Global Engineering for Humanity --- a key component of the certificate is a mandatory international experience. This requirement provides you with hands-on experience working on global engineering challenges through international or virtual internships (including global virtual internships and global career accelerator programs), internationally based research internships, Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering faculty-led or other study abroad programs, or an honors thesis focused on a globally relevant theme. Other comparable experiences may be considered on an individual basis. You should note that international travel that doesn't include an academic, research, experiential, service-learning or professional component doesn't fulfill this requirement. This experience enhances your cross-cultural competencies and provides a practical, immersive opportunity to apply your technical expertise in an international context.

Enrollment requirements

A student pursuing an undergraduate certificate must be enrolled as a degree-seeking student at ASU. Undergraduate certificates are not awarded before the completion of an undergraduate degree. A student who already holds an undergraduate degree may pursue an undergraduate certificate as a nondegree-seeking graduate student.

Program term definitions

Accelerated programs allow students the opportunity to expedite the completion of their degree.

Accelerated master's

These programs allow students to accelerate their studies to earn a bachelor's plus a master's degree in as few as five years (for some programs).

Each program has requirements students must meet to be eligible for consideration. Students typically receive approval to pursue the accelerated master's during the junior year of their bachelor's degree program. Interested students can learn about eligibility requirements and how to apply.

Concurrent degrees allow students to pursue their own personal or professional interests, earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. To add a concurrent degree to your existing degree, work with your academic advisor.

Joint programs, or jointly conferred degrees, are offered by more than one college and provide opportunities for students to take advantage of the academic strengths of two academic units. Upon graduation, students are awarded one degree and one diploma conferred by two colleges.
