Gain the skills needed to tackle the world¿s most pressing challenges and enhance your technical expertise with cross-cultural competencies and hands-on international experiences. Prepare for a future in global engineering, with opportunities to collaborate, innovate and thrive in a multicultural, interconnected world.

Description

The certificate program in global engineering equips students with the interdisciplinary knowledge and skills needed to tackle complex global challenges. The program includes foundational coursework in engineering perspectives, global engineering design, and international-themed courses relevant to students' majors --- such as sustainability, energy, environment, global development, leadership and entrepreneurship. With a focus on global systems thinking, the program prepares students to become socially responsible and effective engineers who are capable of addressing the interconnected problems that transcend national borders.

The global engineering certificate program includes virtually-delivered virtual programs like the Global Career Accelerator that provide exposure to global industries, helping students build their professional skills through internships and applicable projects. Experiential programs like human-centered design projects immerse students in solving practical problems through design thinking, including customer discovery, rapid prototyping and field testing.

In addition to two required courses: FSE 150 Perspectives on Grand Challenges for Engineering and FSE 420 Global Engineering for Humanity, a key component of the certificate is a mandatory international experience, allowing students to gain hands-on exposure to global engineering challenges through internships, research opportunities, or faculty-led study abroad programs. This experience enhances students¿ cross-cultural competencies and provides a practical, immersive opportunity to apply their technical expertise in an international context.

Enrollment requirements

A student pursuing an undergraduate certificate must be enrolled as a degree-seeking student at ASU. Undergraduate certificates are not awarded prior to the award of an undergraduate degree. A student already holding an undergraduate degree may pursue an undergraduate certificate as a nondegree-seeking graduate student.

Global opportunities
Global experience

Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering offers many global opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience and expand their global networks.

For those seeking flexible online options, global virtual internships allow students to work with companies around the world from anywhere, gaining practical experience in fields like engineering, business and design. Additionally, Engineering Projects in Community Service offer students the chance to tackle applicable challenges in underserved communities, with projects across locations such as Kenya, Vietnam and Spain. These opportunities help bridge technical skills with meaningful societal impact, ideal for students interested in sustainable development and social entrepreneurship.

Cultural immersion opportunities abroad allow students to explore local cultures while working on projects that address community needs. Faculty-led summer study abroad programs in countries like Japan, Taiwan, Ireland, China and England combine academic learning with practical exposure, allowing students to gain insights into global industries and innovative practices. These programs are ideal for students in engineering, design, business, sustainability and other fields, offering transformative experiences that prepare them for a future in the global workforce.

Career opportunities

With a strong foundation in both technical engineering skills and cross-cultural competencies, graduates are prepared to work in multinational corporations, international development organizations and global engineering firms. They can pursue roles in industries such as sustainable development, renewable energy, environmental engineering, infrastructure design and technology innovation, where solving complex global challenges is a priority.

In addition to traditional engineering positions, graduates have opportunities to work in global project management, international consulting and leadership roles that require both technical expertise and cultural fluency. Graduates may also contribute to international research initiatives and humanitarian engineering projects, or work with nongovernmental organizations focused on global development and disaster relief. With their enhanced understanding of global trends and the ability to navigate diverse cultural and regulatory environments, these engineers are highly sought after by employers worldwide who need professionals capable of driving innovation and solving problems on a global scale.

What are accelerated programs?
Accelerated programs allow students the opportunity to expedite the completion of their degree.

3 year programs

These programs allow students to fast-track their studies after admission and earn a bachelor's degree in three years or fewer while participating in the same high-quality educational experience of a 4-year option. Students should talk to their academic advisor to get started.

Accelerated master's

These programs allow students to accelerate their studies to earn a bachelor's plus a master's degree in as few as five years (for some programs).

Each program has requirements students must meet to be eligible for consideration. Acceptance to the graduate program requires a separate application. Students typically receive approval to pursue the accelerated master’s during the junior year of their bachelor's degree program. Interested students can learn about eligibility requirements and how to apply.
What are concurrent programs?
Concurrent degrees allow students to pursue their own personal or professional interests, earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. To add a concurrent degree to your existing degree, work with your academic advisor.
What are joint programs?
Joint programs, or jointly conferred degrees, are offered by more than one college and provide opportunities for students to take advantage of the academic strengths of two academic units. Upon graduation, students are awarded one degree and one diploma conferred by two colleges.

What constitutes a new program?
ASU adds new programs to Degree Search frequently. Come back often and look for the “New Programs” option.
What are online programs?
ASU Online offers programs in an entirely online format with multiple enrollment sessions throughout the year. See https://asuonline.asu.edu/ for more information.
What is the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)?
The Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) is a program in which residents of western states (other than Arizona) may be eligible for reduced nonresident tuition. See more information and eligibility requirements on the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) program.
