Are you interested in helping others become the healthiest version of themselves? Build the knowledge and skills to advance your career and prepare for board certification as a health and wellness coach.
The health and wellness coach certificate program brings together coursework from the disciplines of exercise and wellness, nutrition, behavioral health and coaching psychology. Students develop a strong background in, perspective on, and practical experience in the techniques and methods used to decrease and prevent chronic disease risks.
Students in this program learn and practice:
- approaches to guiding individuals through meaningful lifestyle changes
- coaching communication skills
- evidence-based behavior change methodologies
- health coaching techniques
- strategies to influence sustainable healthy lifestyles
Faculty members monitor student-led coaching sessions to provide feedback on how students may improve their coaching skills. A final practical skills evaluation is conducted to assess a student's ability in health and wellness coaching.
Students who successfully complete this meet the eligibility requirements to take the National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach examination offered by the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (https://nbhwc.org).

A student pursuing an undergraduate certificate must be enrolled as a degree-seeking student at ASU. Undergraduate certificates are not awarded before the completion of an undergraduate degree. A student who already holds an undergraduate degree may pursue an undergraduate certificate as a nondegree-seeking graduate student.
Program learning outcomes identify what a student will learn or be able to do upon completion of their program. This program’s learning outcomes include the following:
- Apply evidence-based health and wellness coaching competencies to build a coaching relationship, and guide clients through enriched support for self-awareness and self-discovery.
- Implement health and wellness evidence-based interventions and strategies to elicit positive changes in individuals within the general population.
Graduates can expand their career options with this certificate, which complements a variety of major programs of study.

Program term definitions
Accelerated programs allow students the opportunity to expedite the completion of their degree.
Accelerated master's
These programs allow students to accelerate their studies to earn a bachelor's plus a master's degree in as few as five years (for some programs).
Each program has requirements students must meet to be eligible for consideration. Students typically receive approval to pursue the accelerated master's during the junior year of their bachelor's degree program. Interested students can learn about eligibility requirements and how to apply.
Concurrent degrees allow students to pursue their own personal or professional interests, earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. To add a concurrent degree to your existing degree, work with your academic advisor.
Joint programs, or jointly conferred degrees, are offered by more than one college and provide opportunities for students to take advantage of the academic strengths of two academic units. Upon graduation, students are awarded one degree and one diploma conferred by two colleges.
