Description

The certificate program in environmental education is for students in all majors and for nontraditional educators. The program is designed to establish standards for professional excellence in environmental education, as outlined by the North American Association for Environmental Education.

Environmental education is taught in traditional classrooms and in community-serving organizations such as nature centers, museums, parks and zoos. The program's required coursework increases the environmental literacy of future educators, fosters community leadership strategies, and provides students with opportunities to practice environmental education teaching methods.

Students who complete the certificate program are eligible to apply for the state-level environmental education certification recognized by the North American Association for Environmental Education.

Program learning outcomes

Program learning outcomes identify what a student will learn or be able to do upon completion of their program. This program’s learning outcomes include the following:

  • Design solutions to address environmental issues.
  • Implement environmental education strategies in response to community needs.
Global opportunities
Global experience

Study abroad is available through a twelve-day tropical ecology experience in Costa Rica. This Global Immersion Experience post-spring program allows students to apply what they have learned about the tropical biome, its flora and fauna, and its cultural and global value.

Other opportunities include a twelve-day biodiversity experience in Ecuador and the Galapagos. This Global Immersion Experience post-spring program provides students with the opportunity to apply what they have learned about biodiversity conservation, preservation and restoration of biodiversity and its impact on cultural and global populations.

The environmental education certificate program supports international internships. For example, several students have used the contacts and resources within the program to complete international internships in Costa Rica.

Career opportunities

Graduates who combine the certificate in environmental education with their major program of study may become more marketable to employers. They often decide to pursue employment in educational settings such as nonprofit organizations, nature centers, museums, parks and zoos.

The environmental education certificate does not lead to teacher certification.

What are accelerated programs?
Accelerated programs allow students the opportunity to expedite the completion of their degree.

Accelerated master's

These programs allow students to accelerate their studies to earn a bachelor's plus a master's degree in as few as five years (for some programs).

Each program has requirements students must meet to be eligible for consideration. Students typically receive approval to pursue the accelerated master’s during the junior year of their bachelor's degree program. Interested students can learn about eligibility requirements and how to apply.
What are concurrent programs?
Concurrent degrees allow students to pursue their own personal or professional interests, earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. To add a concurrent degree to your existing degree, work with your academic advisor.
What are joint programs?
Joint programs, or jointly conferred degrees, are offered by more than one college and provide opportunities for students to take advantage of the academic strengths of two academic units. Upon graduation, students are awarded one degree and one diploma conferred by two colleges.

What constitutes a new program?
ASU adds new programs to Degree Search frequently. Come back often and look for the “New Programs” option.
What are online programs?
ASU Online offers programs in an entirely online format with multiple enrollment sessions throughout the year. See https://asuonline.asu.edu/ for more information.
