Develop the skills to handle hazardous materials safely and responsibly. You'll learn to identify, manage and dispose of harmful substances while protecting communities, safeguarding the environment and promoting workplace safety.
The certificate program in hazardous materials and waste management provides you, as a current and prospective employee of industry or government, with a comprehensive and practical curriculum of study in hazardous materials management. The program features instruction by faculty, attorneys and professionals who work in the specific area in which they teach.
You are offered several industry-required courses by the environmental and resource management professional development program targeted at environmental professionals who engage in management and transportation of hazardous materials and waste: the Occupational Safety and Health Administration-mandated 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response course, the 16-hour initial Hazardous Materials Transportation Certification course, and their corresponding eight-hour refresher courses. These training courses are provided to you at less than 15% of the actual cost to support your professional development.

The certificate in hazardous materials and waste management is available to all ASU students in good standing, except those pursuing any program in environmental and resource management.
To add the certificate in hazardous materials and waste management, a student must hold, at minimum, junior status and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00.
A student pursuing an undergraduate certificate must be enrolled as a degree-seeking student at ASU. Undergraduate certificates are not awarded before an undergraduate degree is completed. A student who already holds an undergraduate degree may pursue an undergraduate certificate as a nondegree-seeking graduate student.
Program learning outcomes identify what a student will learn or be able to do upon completion of their program. This program’s learning outcomes include the following:
- Evaluate environmental policies and regulations that apply to environmental and resource management.
- Apply management, scientific and technical solutions to natural and anthropogenic environmental problems.
Graduates with the skills gained in this certificate program are in high demand and can find work in industry, governmental management and regulatory agencies, as well as policymaking organizations.
Graduates are firmly grounded in the scientific, technical and legal problems facing hazardous waste managers in today's business climate. They are prepared to be waste, health and safety professionals in industrial settings such as manufacturing, mining, and oil and gas, and in environmental engineering consulting firms. They also ensure compliance with OSHA and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requirements in manufacturing operations, water and wastewater treatment facilities, and local governments. On the regulatory side, graduates work for agencies such as the EPA and state and county departments of environmental quality.

Program term definitions
Accelerated programs allow students the opportunity to expedite the completion of their degree.
Accelerated master's
These programs allow students to accelerate their studies to earn a bachelor's plus a master's degree in as few as five years (for some programs).
Each program has requirements students must meet to be eligible for consideration. Students typically receive approval to pursue the accelerated master's during the junior year of their bachelor's degree program. Interested students can learn about eligibility requirements and how to apply.
Concurrent degrees allow students to pursue their own personal or professional interests, earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. To add a concurrent degree to your existing degree, work with your academic advisor.
Joint programs, or jointly conferred degrees, are offered by more than one college and provide opportunities for students to take advantage of the academic strengths of two academic units. Upon graduation, students are awarded one degree and one diploma conferred by two colleges.
